Dr. Thom Lobe
Dr. Lobe is a highly accomplished surgeon with a distinguished educational and professional background. He completed his undergraduate degree in zoology at The George Washington University and attended medical school at the University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins, the University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard. Mentored by former Surgeon General Dr. C. Everett Koop, he graduated Cum Laude from the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
Dr. Lobe trained in General Surgery at Ohio State University Hospitals and in Pediatric Surgery at The Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He then became Chief of Service at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where he developed an early program for laser therapy in children’s diseases. He also worked at Shriner’s Burns Hospital, gaining expertise in advanced nutrition, hormone therapy, and regenerative wound healing.
For 20 years, Dr. Lobe was based in Memphis, where he led the first pediatric surgery residency-training program in the Mid-South at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center. During this time, he trained over 40 surgeons from around the world. He also served as Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, making significant contributions to cancer care. Notably, he developed minimally invasive surgery techniques for children and helped establish a leading program in the country for this advanced method. Later, Dr. Lobe was recruited to Iowa to lead a program focused on advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgery.
